As waterborne industrial coatings continue to move toward higher performance, higher film build and lower VOC emissions, formulators are increasingly required to balance application viscosity, leveling and sag resistance.
In spray and high-build applications, coatings are often appropriately thinned to improve application and leveling. However, reducing viscosity can also increase the risk of sagging and runs, particularly when applying a thicker wet film.
The challenge is therefore to improve application flow and leveling while maintaining strong sag resistance after application.
A conventional approach to improving sag resistance is simply to increase the overall viscosity of the coating. However, excessive viscosity can negatively affect sprayability, flow and leveling.
For high-build waterborne coatings, the key is therefore not simply higher viscosity, but controlled shear response and rapid rheological recovery.
ANJEKA 4440 is a liquid modified polyamide rheology additive for waterborne coatings.
It provides strong shear-thinning behavior and reversible thixotropy, forming a reversible three-dimensional network within the coating system.
Under shear during application, the coating viscosity decreases rapidly, facilitating spraying, flow and leveling.
After application, the rheological structure rapidly recovers, helping to prevent the wet film from flowing downward and reducing sagging and runs.

Improved High-Build Sag Resistance
The rapid recovery of the thixotropic structure after application helps suppress sagging and runs, supporting higher film build in a single application.
Sag Resistance Even After Thinning
For waterborne coating systems that require thinning to improve application properties, ANJEKA 4440 helps maintain strong sag resistance while reducing application viscosity.
This helps address the common formulation challenge of “thinning for better application, but increased risk of sagging.”
Smooth Application and Leveling
The strong shear-thinning behavior under application conditions facilitates coating flow, spreading and spray application, helping achieve a smoother and more uniform film appearance.
Balanced Storage Stability and Application Performance
The reversible rheological network increases static viscosity under low-shear conditions, helping reduce pigment and filler settling. Under application shear, the viscosity decreases to facilitate application.
This allows storage stability and application performance to be better balanced within the same formulation.
Improved Effect Pigment Orientation
For waterborne coatings containing aluminum or pearlescent pigments, ANJEKA 4440 can also assist pigment orientation, helping improve the uniformity and visual appearance of metallic and pearlescent finishes.
According to the technical data, the recommended dosage of ANJEKA 4440 for sag resistance is 0.5–2.0% as supplied, based on total formulation weight.
The optimum dosage should be determined through formulation testing according to the resin system, pigment/filler composition and application conditions.
For waterborne high-build coatings, thinning and sag resistance do not necessarily have to be a trade-off.
With appropriate rheological control, the coating can flow and level effectively during application while rapidly rebuilding its structure afterward, providing improved resistance to sagging during high-build application.
